Good Shepherd Sunday or Vocation Sunday
Every boat needs a rudder and a captain. Without both of them, the boat will drift away in the ocean and finally sink. A society that becomes more and more secular, that becomes more and more forgetting or denying that God is our Creator and Father, has no future but chaos. Who, apart from Jesus Christ, true God and true man, can be a true shepherd for human beings to lead them to the Vision of God?
God called parents to be the first good shepherds for their own children. We particularly pray today that Jesus calls many Catholic boys to become priests and good shepherds.
In these few verses taken from today’s Gospel, we hear the pressing call of Jesus to believe in Him who is both, the only gate to Heaven and the good shepherd who gives His life to each sheep.
“I tell you most solemnly (…) I am the gate of the sheepfold. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: he will go freely in and out and be sure of finding pasture (…) I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.”(John 10)
- What does Jesus want* us to understand by the “gate” and “entering through the gate”?
For St John Chrysostom, Christ calls “door” or “gate” the Holy Scriptures. They are called “door” for through them we have access to the knowledge of God. According to St Augustine, the “door” is to be understood as Christ since it is through Him that we enter; this is also revealed in Apocalypse chapter 4: “After this I saw an open door in heaven”. Therefore, whoever enters the sheepfold has to enter through that door, Christ, and not by another …that door is small because of the humility of Christ: “Come to me for I am meek and humble of heart”.(Mt.11,29) Also, since Jesus affirmed that He is the “Way and the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6), is it not in our best interest to listen to his words when we wake up every morning especially the daily Mass Readings?
- Finally, how can we know that we are good sheep?
St Thomas Aquinas answered: “The sheep are those who have faith in Christ and who are in the grace of God”. Thus, let us live in truth away from Satan, “the father of lies”, to enter Heaven through a deep union with Christ, the only true gate to Heaven.
