Did Jesus ever reveal what the signs preceding his final coming in glory will be? Yes!  Here are just a few verses:

“Take care that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. For you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars. Take care that you do not be alarmed…” (Mt.24,5-6)

In today’s readings, we hear the prophet Malachi proclaiming the terrible punishment of those who despise God and His commandments. Yet, for those who strive to obey the Lord with faith, hope and love, need have no fear:

“The day is coming now, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and the evil-doers will be like stubble. The day that is coming is going to burn them up, says the Lord of Hosts, leaving them neither root nor stalk. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will shine out with healing in its rays.” (Malachi 3:19-20)

The people who lived through World Ward I and World War II, like those now living through the horrors of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Syria, could think that the

Apocalypse is near. Yet, wars have existed since Cain killed Abel, his brother, as one of the consequences of disobeying God’s Commandment. In St Luke’s Gospel we hear Jesus prophesying terrible times:

“When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened, for this is something that must happen but the end is not so soon.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines here and there; there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. ‘But before all this

happens, men will seize you and persecute you; they will hand you over to the synagogues and to imprisonment, and bring you before kings and governors because of my name – and that will be your opportunity to bear witness. “

As to natural disasters, no one can prevent them from happening. Yet, we have the power to prevent wars. Indeed, wars start in our own heart and mind, between spouses. Let us decide to stop wars within our own family,  before dreaming of stopping all wars in the world. One way to do this is setting time aside for family daily prayer.

“Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to stand in confidence before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21,3-6)
