To those of you who are parents and grandparents, you may well grasp the legitimate sadness and even anger of the king in the parable if you imagine the following situation: You have invited all your grown up children for a Christmas family gathering and ordered the best catering in town for the occasion but see that all of them declined your kind invitation for various reasons, what would your reaction be?
“Jesus began to speak to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son’s wedding. He sent his servants to call those who had been invited, but they would not come. Next he sent some more servants. “Tell those who have been invited” he said “that I have my banquet all prepared my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to the wedding.” But they were not interested (…)
Question 1: Are we interested in responding to God’s love for us by taking time daily for private prayer morning and evening at least? Are we accepting the invitation of Jesus to receive His divine Word at least every Sunday and the sacrament of his Eucharistic presence? Or…do we have many other things to do on Sunday?
Question 2: Since the first children of God who were invited declined the invitation to the wedding, the King invited all other people, bad and good as well. But why did the king throw one man out?
“When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a wedding garment, and said to him, “How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?” And the man was silent. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot and throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.’ (Mt 22)
It is crucial for us to urgently find out what is the meaning of the necessary wedding garment without which we will not enter Heaven. Could it mean faith in Jesus and charity towards God and neighbour?
Let us ask ourselves then: Do I currently have that wedding garment? Jesus‘ words are not just for the chief priests but also for all human beings!
