The Gospel for today is a great moment for in it the Son of God teaches us how to pray. He is not just a guru, a spiritual teacher, or religious genius, but the Son of God himself. This is why Christians take the ‘Our Father’ as the model for all prayer. A desire to pray is planted deep within us because prayer just means the conscious desire to communicate with God. We can neglect to pray or become lazy in prayer but we can never really lose it because we are ‘wired’ for God. We are his children whom he loves infinitely, and Jesus came to tell us to say: ‘Father’, ‘Abba’

Here are some quotes on prayer from the saints who became experts in the way of prayer and love:

“Prayer is the best weapon we possess. It is the key that opens the heart of God” St Padre Pio

“For me prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned towards heaven, it is a cry of recognition and love, embracing both trial and joy” St Therese of Lisieux

“Whether we realise it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst and ours” St Augustine

If the lungs of prayer and the Word of God do not nourish the breath of spiritual life, we risk suffocating in the midst of a thousand daily cares. Prayer is the breath of the soul and of life” Pope Benedict XVI

“Love to pray. Prayer enlarges the heart until it is capable of containing God’s gift of himself” Blessed Mother Teresa.

“Prayer is in fact the recognition of our limits and our dependence: we come from God, we are of God, and to God we return” St John Paul II

“Don’t you long to shout to those youths who are bustling around you: Fools! Leave those worldly things that shackle the heart – and very often degrade it – leave all that and come with us in search of love!” St Josemaria Escriva

“Don’t imagine that, if you had a great deal of time, you would spend more of it in prayer. Get rid of that idea; it is no hindrance to prayer to spend your time well” St Teresa of Avila

“We must pray without tiring, for the salvation of mankind does not depend upon material success…but on Jesus alone” St Frances Xavier Cabrini

“Pray, hope, and don’t worry” St Padre Pio

Finally, let us hear the plea of our Blessed Mother in these days when Satan is turning many people away from life with God:     “PRAY, PRAY, PRAY”
